The Benefits of Yoga

The Benefits of yoga

Yoga is a holistic practice that helps to link or bring harmony to the mind and body. Through the use of physical postures, or asana, and breath work or pranayama, we can synergies the mind and body. We can categorize the benefits of yoga into emotional, mind, body, spirit categories.

Emotionally,

Yoga can help to process emotions that are stored in the somatic nervous system. Because yoga is calming, soothing, and regulating, it provides an anchor and a feeling of well-being that can help to call up unprocessed materials which you can take the opportunity to further work through in a journal, or with a therapist if you like.

Mentally,

Yoga helps to “burn through” the mind’s chatter that can often cause us to get stuck in old patterns of thought and behavior that stop us from living a healthier life. Yoga provides skills that help you cultivate calm strength off the mat to ensure life’s challenges. Yoga helps to balance your energy so that you can feel balanced and prepared to handle whatever comes to you today.

Physically,

Many people are becoming familiar with yoga’s unique quality of creating flexibility, range of motion, muscular balance, increased strength, and improved physical posture. It is also possible that yoga may help the digestive system and improve the function of various organs in the body.

Spiritually,

Yoga has a rich heritage of spiritual traditions and practices.  Practicing various rituals can help you to connect to yourself and your own spiritual practice, whatever you believe, and align yourself with your higher power. Some of these practices include chanting, mantras, and the use of mudras in meditation. You can study the ancient texts such as the Yoga Sutras and the Vedas if that is your type of interest.
